In the course of past one century, the role of Korea University has changed?from that of a cradle of the nation’s intellectuals to one of being the incubator of global leaders. Together with the members of the University community - alumni, students, faculty and staff, and parents and relatives of the students, and friends of the University - I would like to extend a warm welcome to you for visiting our University site.
Korea University was established in 1905 with the earnest wishes of the nation to save the country through education at a time when it was being encroached upon by foreign powers.
During the one century of existence and development, Korea University, as the best educational institution in the country in fact as well as in name, faced and overcame trials and challenges in unison with the nation as a whole. During the Japanese occupation, the University became a pioneer in introducing modern learning and a cradle of national independence movement. After liberation and independence, the University played a key role as the backbone of national development and democratization. We educated our youths, helping to develop both their independent minds and expert capabilities through research and education. Our efforts not only preserved national identity but also inculcated global universality. At every turning point of our history, we proposed new coordinates and led the times. We have honored the national expectation with our founding principles of Liberty, Justice, and Truth. In so doing, we have built a worthwhile and glorious history.
Korea University has now passed the one hundred year mark since establishment and is undertaking new strides. As today’s world enters the era of unlimited competition, knowledge and information are the driving forces of national development. In our globalization effort, we are strengthening our faculty with distinguished scholars and renewing the campus so that we will be reborn as the academic mecca drawing international attention. We are strengthening the research capabilities of the faculty and nurturing research talent that can work on the global stage. The results that Korea University has achieved so far are acknowledged by renowned evaluation organizations, both domestically and internationally. Superlative appraisals by these organizations truly indicate the status of Korea University branching out from Korea and reaching out to the world.
However, Korea University will not remain complacent with its current successes and achievements. We will keep reviewing emerging realities and make plans for the future. We realize the heavy responsibilities Korea University bears toward the country and its society. We at Korea University will do our best to live up to the expectations of the country and society by creating an atmosphere where all members of Korea University trust and respect each other and remaining faithful to the innate responsibilities of the university. By realizing our capabilities and potential accumulated over the past century, we will stand alongside the distinguished universities of advanced countries. Through bold investment, we will recruit the most outstanding scholars and secure cutting-edge research facilities. By establishing an academic identity fulfilling the principles of democracy and market economy, we will take responsibility for the future of Korea.
Korea University intends to write a new millennial history as one of the world’s distinguished universities based on pride and dignity earned during its first century as the incubator of national intellectuals. As Korea University is continues to write its history, more difficult challenges and trials await us. However, Korea University gladly accepts those challenges as noble missions given to us by our nation. I am positive that the future of our country will brightly unfold through Korea University.
