GSIS was established in 1991 in response to the growing forces of globalization and
internationalization. By 1996 the Korean government was calling for experts in commercial policy,
international relations, and area studies; and by March 1997, GSIS obliged with graduate programs in
International Commerce and Cooperation and International Area Studies. In late 1996, the Korean
Ministry of Education designated GSIS as one of Korea¡¯s top five graduate schools of international
studies qualified for a major five-year government grant. The GSIS has undergone several reforms
in its

educational curriculum and set up the current system of two Departments (Department of
international Studies and Department of Korean Studies) since the beginning of 2004.
The major goals of GSIS are to educate and train specialists in international commerce and
international cooperation and international area studies, as well as Korean studies. It offers two
master¡¯s degree programs under the departments of International Studies and Korean Studies. The
Department of International Studies also offers two Ph.D. degree programs in International
Commerce and International Cooperation. The M.A. and Ph.D. programs accept new students for
both spring and fall semesters each year. In addition, GSIS offers two Dual-Degree Programs; one
with the School of International Service, American University and other with the Robert F.
Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, New York University.
