KU Multifunction Smartcard
LIFE AT KU
Korea University will become the first university in Korea to implement open platform multifunction student identification Combi cards. The cards will not only act as typical ID cards, but will also allow the school to electronically manage library admittance and class attendance, and be used as electronic money by students and faculty members.
¡Ø Combi Card: Cards using both IC (Integrated Circuit, requires direct contact to be read) and RF (Radio Frequency, does not require contact) interfaces, Promises high level of security
Working jointly with Hana Bank, Korea University will introduce a new identification card for its students and faculty members. The new multifunction Smartcard will provide electronic money features and be used to take class attendance, manage library & dormitory admittance while providing all the traditional identification card functions.
¡Ø The barcode printed on the back will be used for library services in joint with the RF chip embedded in the multifunction smartcard.
In addition to offering a wide array of services in one card, the open platform base of the multifunction Smartcard allows the school to upgrade its functions on an ongoing basis. The use of both IC and RF interfaces helps to secure a high level of security as well.
Card readers placed at the entrance to classrooms will take the attendance for each class. Students will be able to check their attendance results on line.
Instead of the former barcode system, the new Smartcards will function like current transportation cards. Card readers placed at the entrance to the library will be able to read cards placed inside wallets, eliminating the nuisance of taking out the card at each time of entrance. The new cards will also be used for study carrel reservations.
In order to use one of the PCs located in the library, students will be required to receive verification by inserting the new ID card into a reader. Managers can easily limit the use of the PCs to one hour per student using the new system.
The school will also be able to easily monitor dormitory admittance using the new card system. Instead of personally checking each student¡¯s ID at the entrance, admittance will be automatically granted to dormitory tenants placing their cards on the reader in front of the entrance. The cards will also be needed to enter the dormitory cafeteria.
Using electronic money loaded onto the multifunction Smartcard, students will be able to issue transcripts, certificate of graduation or other official certificates at machines located in the Central Square and the Science Library.
The new cards will be used to monitor admittance into specific buildings or sections. Security systems can be set up to allow entrance to only KU students or specified faculty members.
