Korea University (President Kim Dong-One) held a completion ceremony for the newly remodeled student hall, Song Hyeon Square, on the natural sciences campus on June 12.
The ceremony was attended by about 100 people, including Korea University President Kim Dong-One, Song Hyeon Group Chairman Song Moo-hyun (Metallurgical Engineering,'69), Provost & Executive Vice President Jung Soon-young, Executive Vice President for Research Yoon Seong-taek, College of Life Sciences and Biotechnology Dean Cho Yong-sung, College of Science Dean Lee Mee-hye, College of Engineering Dean Jang Gil-soo, Dean of Student Affairs Park Hyun-sook, and Vice President for Campus Planning Won Chung-yeon, along with other faculty members and students, to celebrate the new beginning of Song Hyeon Square.
The remodeling of the natural sciences campus student hall was carried out as part of the 120th-anniversary project celebrating Korea University's founding to ensure user safety by renovating the old building, improving the basic living environment for students, and guaranteeing safe autonomous activities.
Song Hyeon Square is a newly created space with one basement level and four ground floors for a total floor area of 1,873.65㎡ (about 567 pyeong) and is a renovation of the existing building that was completed in 1981. This included space rearrangement and interior construction; installation of a new elevator; replacement of windows and installation of exterior louvers; expansion of air conditioning, heating, and ventilation facilities; and improvement of restrooms and shower rooms.
Song Hyeon Square will be used as a central space to support the community activities and communication of students in the natural sciences, including student society rooms for the Aegineung Societies’ Association, college student councils and student society rooms, and common student self-governing spaces.
At the ceremony, President Kim Dong-One said, “Song Hyeon Square will become an excellent foundation for society activities and student self-governing activities on the natural sciences campus. I hope that students will learn the values of cooperation, solidarity, creativity, and challenge here and gain a broader perspective for the future.”
Chairman Song Moo-hyun emphasized, “A student hall should be more than just a resting place; it should be a place where people share their thoughts and grow together. I expect students to contemplate deeply about people, society, and the future at Song Hyeon Square and become talented individuals who will lead the world.”
This remodeling was made possible by the efforts and support of donors, including Chairman Song Moo-hyun of Song Hyeon Group. Song Hyeon Square, reborn as a complex cultural space, is expected to become a key hub for nurturing creative talent.
