Korea University Launches Second Semester “1,000 Won Breakfast” Program to Provide Students with a Hearty Meal Every Day

Korea University (President Kim Dong-One) has launched the “1,000 Won Breakfast” program for the second semester of the 2025 academic year.

On Tuesday, September 30, he joined students for a “1,000 Won Breakfast” at the student cafeteria in the Korea University Student Union Building at 8:40 AM. Since taking office, President Kim has made it a point to have a meal and communicate with students at the start of this initiative each semester.

President Kim stated, “I hope students enjoy a hearty breakfast and start their day healthily,” adding, “We will continue striving to provide students with a better meal environment through the program.”

This semester, the student cafeteria in the newly remodeled student union building will offer the “1,000-Won Breakfast” program, allowing students to enjoy breakfast in a more pleasant environment.

Students who participated in the event said the program alleviates their financial burden and provides them with tangible benefits. Jin Ga-won (Global Autonomous Studies, '25), who is from China, said, “It's a huge help for students who live off-campus or in dorms and find it hard to prepare breakfast for themselves.” Byeon Myeong-seop (Graduate School of History, '20) added, “It's great to start the day with a hearty breakfast at such an affordable price,” expressing his hope that “such initiatives for students will continue in the future.”

Korea University has supported student breakfasts since 2018 through the “Heartwarming Breakfast” program and the KU Pride Club (KUPC) fund, which collects monthly donations of 10,000 won or more from alumni. Since 2023, it has participated in the “1,000 Won Breakfast” initiative organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) and the Korea Agency of Education, Promotion and Information Service in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (EPIS). Currently, tens of thousands of students utilize this program each semester, giving an overwhelmingly positive response. The university plans to listen to student feedback in order to enhance customer satisfaction and to continue offering this program consistently.
